Hey, New Way, I’m Editor-In-Chief of the Campus Courier, Simon McAvity, and I’m here to talk about and celebrate New Way’s massive homecoming victory, and most importantly, explain it in a way people with no sports knowledge can understand. Let’s get this show on the road:
Again, written in a way that people like me, and possibly you, who have no understanding of football, can understand. So in order to start talking about New Way’s game, here’s the most basic explanation of football possible for both of us. A football team has 22 players and includes an offense, a defense, and special teams. The game is divided into 4 15-minute quarters, in which both teams’ offense groups take turns trying to reach the 10-meter mark of their opponent’s field with the ball. The defense, in return, tries to stop them by, in the case of flag football, tearing off their flag. Once one side tears off the other’s flag, they then get a turn as offense.
Now that I, and many of you, know basically how football works, let’s get some team perspectives, with Kai Taplin, a running back and occasional wide receiver, and Louie Williams, a wide receiver. Both said the games were very fast-paced. They also mentioned that the games weren’t just wins; they were massive victories. This is proven by the fact that in one game, they “mercy ruled,” meaning that they won by over 50 points. According to both Louie and Kai, the energy at the game was very high, and the consecutive wins only reinforced that.
It’s also very important to note that this is the first time New Way has won this big since the introduction of flag football as a New Way sport. Last season, we went 1 and 17; this season, we went 10 and 10, see the difference? In relation to this newfound success, Kai said, “It feels like we really accomplished something,” and Louie said, “It feels great!” The energy in the crowd reflected this victory, Kai said, “everybody was motivated, everybody was cheering”.
Overall, it was a big win for New Way, and an achievement like this shows a strong promise that we’ll make the playoffs again next year. It also proves that New Way can and will be successful in flag football. After a couple of bad seasons, things were looking bleak, but in this one, everything turned around, for now, and likely for the future. With that evidence laid out, I’ll sign off and thank those I interviewed for providing information, -Editor-In-Chief Simon McAvity.
