This is Mrs. Boone’s 17th year at New Way! She 100% believes reading and spelling are used in everyday life. Whether it’s reading signs while driving, filling out an application, reading a menu at a restaurant, reading a recipe, sending a text message, and more! You need these skills to be successful and functional in everyday life. Mrs. Boone has always been a great teacher for students who are trying to learn how to read or are not quite there yet in their reading level.
She finds teaching fun since she gets to have the same students every year until they finish the Wilson Reading Program. This is great for them because they can develop a strong bond, and she can see them grow from start to finish. They create fun memories that are remembered from year to year. There are always some things you find in a student once they get what they’re doing, like their confidence growing, as well as their accuracy and speed in reading continuing to improve. They score highly on independent reading charts, can answer questions regarding what they’ve read, and improve their spelling accuracy.
But as a reading therapy teacher, there are ups and downs; not everything goes perfectly. It takes time and effort to put something together, and some days it can be hard when groups get stuck on a certain concept. It can feel frustrating to both the student and her; it feels like they worked on the “same thing” every day, but once the information/concept finally sticks, they celebrate and move on to the next concept. However, discipline issues in or out of the classroom can be hard for her as well.
Here are some facts people probably didn’t know about Ms. Boone: she has a precious 2-year-old daughter. She has been skydiving before. She and her husband, Mr. Boone, have hiked at least 100 times per year; usually, they have done more. They’re trying to aim for a total of 500 miles or more this year.
Overall, Mrs. Boone loves being a teacher and making a difference for students. Helping them learn to read is very rewarding and a skill they will use their whole lives.
