New Way’s Chess Team is recruiting a new sub? Why should you care? Because you could be that sub. Why would you want to be? Because New Way’s chess team is a close-knit brotherhood of talented players, and chess is one of the greatest games ever invented. If you have a lot of experience at chess, great! If you don’t, we understand! With the best players at school on your side, we’re sure you’d improve massively. Now, allow me to enumerate more reasons to join.
What are the benefits of playing chess? Chess is a game of critical thinking skills, and playing it has been proven to help your brain improve them. The time commitments would be practice every Tuesday and games on varying days. As a sub, you wouldn’t have to show up to every game, but only when someone on the team can’t make it. The current team members you would be joining are student coach and captain Simon McAvity, Kayson Bowles, Rhys Patterson, and Paul Palmieri.
You wouldn’t be joining a losing team, either; last year, the current team members achieved 2nd Seed in the state for their games. This means they won the 2nd most games during the season before the Playoffs. This means you, as a new recruit, would have plenty of backup whenever you are needed. It also means, again, you would have the school’s best players to help you improve, no matter your experience level. It could also be a social opportunity if you are in need of one, as the team sits together every day at lunch to practice. While not required, if you do join the team, you are welcome to join us at the table.
In other words, there are tons of reasons to play chess, and there are even more reasons to join the team. We are in need of a sub and would happily induct anyone into our team, whether new to the game or a longtime veteran.
