Learning to play an instrument requires practice and time, but a lot can be accomplished even learning one specific type of guitar. Over the summer, I was bored until I decided to start playing acoustic guitar. By using the guitar, I have learned to play some of my favorite songs, which allowed me to unlock skills that I think high schoolers can benefit from.
Playing guitar has helped improve a number of skills. Since I started playing, I have helped improve my memory. In fact, according to 158guitar.com, guitar helps improve memory by learning chords and song lyrics to access the human brain’s memory centers. In addition, playing guitar has improved my dexterity by bending my fingers in different ways. While playing, I have also gained more confidence in my singing voice.
There are plenty of opportunities to acquire skills in guitar. A good number of schools in Arizona offer guitar lessons or have programs to join a band like School of Rock. Also, there are ways to learn guitar solos as well.
While there are ways to be taught the instrument professionally, I recommend using an app called Ultimate Guitar. Ultimate Guitar allows you to view the lyrics to a song when switching cords while playing, being able to view the difficulty of each song. My favorite feature is being able to see how fingers should be positioned for every cord. Materials that are important for guitars are a capo, a guitar tuner, spear strings just in case you break a string, a guitar stand, and a guitar pick.
By starting off small with an acoustic guitar, high schoolers can develop skills by learning the basics of an instrument. Learning guitar saved me from boredom and helped me acquire great skills, whether it be physically or mentally. Furthermore, there are other types of guitars out there that you can still get valuable skills from. Although it may take some time, practice does make perfection.
