There have been many executive orders signed by President Trump. A well-known effort by Trump has been an attempt to downsize the government workforce, carried out by Elon Musk and his unofficial Department of Government efficiency. The directive ordering these firings was labeled as likely illegal, putting the firings on hold. Nevertheless, Trump has passed other executive orders to create his vision for America. A specific directive was to ban any transgender individuals from serving in the military. However, an injunction was granted by District Judge Ana Reyas blocking the directive. “Indeed, the cruel irony is that thousands of transgender service members have sacrificed, some risk their lives, -to ensure for others the very equal protection rights the Military Ban seeks to deny them” Reyas remarked.
In addition, Trump and his administration have arrested thousands of Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador suspected of being “gang members”. On March 16th, US District Judge James Boasberg issued for the deportations to be delayed. The rejection of the deportation plan seemed to anger the president, as he later called for the judge to be impeachment of the Judge. Soon after, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Justice John Roberts refused calls for Impeachment of Judge Boasberg stating “For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision”.
The repudiation from the Supreme Court leader displayed the controversy over the credibility of the immigrants being gang members and heightened tension between the Executive and Judicial branches. There have only been eight judges fully impeached, most for personal or egregious behavior. To impeach a federal judge, it takes a majority vote from the House of Representatives. Although it takes a 2/3rds majority from the Senate; thus Republicans need the support from Democrats assuming Trump wants to take his executive powers to the extreme. However, it is unclear what will take place next if Trump decides to escalate the current situation.
