Did you know that New Way’s Chess Team is already training for this year’s season? Well, they are, and they’re improving rapidly. And I, the Campus Courier’s Editor-In-Chief, as well as Team Captain, would like to tell you all about the chess team and how they’re preparing for the coming season, and what they have to say about it.
Last year, Paul Palmieri, Rhys Patterson, Kayson Bowles, Andrew Van Daam, and Simon McAvity achieved 2nd place in New Way’s chess league. This means that the New Way team got the 2nd most wins before the championship. Then, the New Way team proceeded to lose the championship, despite fighting valiantly all the way.
They might’ve lost last year, but that’s where this year comes in. A new team has already begun to assemble itself, made up of veterans of last year’s team and nerd alliance, a small team of self-proclaimed and chess prodigy nerds who often work together. These members include Paul Palmieri, Simon McAvity, Rhys Patterson, and Kayson Bowles. Everyone in this team has improved their rating by at least 1.5 times since last year, and they continue to train, and they are improving every day at lunch and every Monday after school.
That’s really all to say that’s an objective fact on the team’s improvement, but what’s almost as important as training is their feelings on the coming season, after all, if they didn’t care, they wouldn’t win. So here are 3 of their individual takes on the coming season:
Rhys Patterson: ”Pretty confident, no comment!”
Kayson Bowles: “I’m very confident.”
Simon McAvity: “We fought incredibly well last year, we got the 2nd seed on our first season, and while we may have lost, we will win this year. It’s like Churchill said, “We shall fight them on the beaches, we shall fight them with pawns, we shall fight them with rooks, and we shall fight them with queens.”
In these last words, all I have to say is the chess team has improved drastically, but whether that is enough to bring home the gold, only time will tell. Fingers crossed we win first place this year!
