Valuable Jewelry taken from the Louvre during a bold weekend robbery is estimated to be worth 88 million euros, or just over 100 million, according to the Paris prosecutor on Tuesday afternoon. “This sum is indeed extremely spectacular” the prosecutor, Laure Beccauau, stated during a conversation with RTL radio, “However, it cannot be compared to the historical harm inflicted by this theft.”
Early on Sunday, October 19th, thieves used a mechanical ladder to ascend to the second floor of the Louvre, cut out a window, and entered the section containing the Apollo Gallery. Within just a few minutes, they made off with eight items from a collection of royal jewels and crown diamonds. This included a sapphire necklace, an emerald necklace with matching earrings, and a jeweled crown that belonged to Empress Eugenie, the spouse of Napoleon III.
As of Tuesday, October 21st, the perpetrators had still not been located. However, authorities indicate they are operating under the assumption that the thieves are likely affiliated with a criminal organization, which experts suggest would be more inclined to dismantle the stolen gems for profit rather than appreciating their artistic worth.
