New Way is being hit with a massive thunderstorm as I write this, as it has started raining, and all the students at New Way Academy are being affected. Many were just dancing in the rain and having a lot of fun at first, as you know, it doesn’t rain a lot in Phoenix, Arizona, but slowly the rain started to pour a little more. As students were told to head to the cafeteria to eat their lunch, the school announced that recess would be indoors today due to the rain.
Most students were ok with indoor recess after the lunch bell was rung. Students started to head towards recess, mainly in the gym, while I headed to Ms. Sipple’s classroom. I was going to cut through the shorter route, but the entire floor was flooded, at least 2 feet (0.61 m), so I had to take the long route to Ms.Sipple’s classroom, where I would spend recess eating chocolate-dipped apples. Once I left Ms. Sipple’s, the rain was coming down even harder than before, forcing me to take the long route to class, as the path seemed to be flooding. When I arrived at class, the entire route I had taken had been covered in water, as our school is not prepared for the rain.
Heading into the broadcast journalism, I thought that the rain would settle down. Was I wrong? Yes, the rain started coming down like hail, and I heard 5 thunder strikes. The entire school seemed to be flooded when Mrs. Chavez came on the intercom, announcing that we would not be attending our 8th-period class due to the amount of water on campus. Making it unsafe to attend 8th period with this announcement coming just minutes after a previous announcement saying to only leave your classroom if necessary, it indicated that the campus was not only partly, but completely flooded. This is backed up by the flash food and severe thunderstorm warnings I received an hour ago. For the rest of the day, they had us sit in our 7th-period class and just do work for that class. In conclusion, the thunderstorm caused a lot of changes throughout the next week, which really proved the devastation caused by the storm.
