Roblox, in the last few weeks, has been in a lot of controversy for a lot to say the least, all of this started on Tuesday when Roblox corporation banned a user known as Schlep. This ban was considered shocking as Schlep was known for catching predators on the Roblox platform and getting them arrested. Roblox banned Schlep for what they claim are safety reasons, though the motives are much deeper. Hours after Schlep got banned, Roblox CEO David Baszuki was called out for predatory practices on the platform, which has a player base of mostly children.
On top of that, multiple known bad actors on the Roblox platform who got exposed for making “condo” games, “Condo” meaning games with sexual content, on the platform never faced any action, not even a warning. While someone like Schlep, a guy who gets pedophiles off of Roblox’s platform, gets banned and sent a cease and desist letter sent to them for according to Roblox endangering the platform. Because of what Roblox has done, it has brought a lot of attention to the platform, with all of this attention being bad for the platform. We have seen multiple famous figures leave the Star Program, which is a group for Roblox influencers. On top of the backlash, Roblox was banned in Qatar for child safety reasons and is a topic of ongoing investigations by both the United States government and the state of Louisiana, which has announced that it will be suing Roblox for child online endangerment.
Given that reality, why is it so important to ask the question: Does Roblox care more about profit than child safety? The answer to that question is yes, well, at least by what we have seen in the last 2 years. This has also been shown by Roblox, allowing games that support kids doing weird and or dangerous activities on the platform. An example being a public bathroom simulator is one of the games that was mentioned for supporting this type of behavior on the platform. Other well-known games that have this type of behavior include many replay games that include Meep City and Roblox Role-play Life. Both of these games had the party feature, which allowed people, potentially predators, to enter private rooms. These games are a hotspot for predators. On top of that, Roblox has this thing called the catalog, which is a marketplace on Roblox where any user can upload an item. Unsurprisingly, there have been some items have been uploaded onto the platform that are not appropriate for kids, and it’s not only items as Roblox recently Roblox added emotes that allow users to do some not kid-friendly things on the platform.
This is not a good look for Roblox. I. It shows that Roblox moderation does not know what they are doing, and because of that, the damage is still being done. A famous podcaster named Chris Hanson, famous for his documentary on how To Catch A Predator, has collaborated with Schlep, the Roblox predator catcher, in an investigation on Roblox child safety and its focus on profit and not protecting young users. With this being recent, there is still a lot that we do not know, and the drama is still ongoing. But in the end, here’s my advice for any Roblox user who wants to stay safe: if you think something is weird, then most likely it is.
