Trump and putin
Grant Moser
The United States President Donald Trump said that he will gain territory back for Ukraine in the meeting with Putin that takes place on Friday the 15th. This meeting would be the first time that Trump has met Putin; the last time being when Biden met with Putin was in 2021. Russia currently occupies a large amount of Ukrainian territory due to the Russian-Ukrainian war that has been happening for 2 years. Trump says that it will be an initial encounter with Russian president Vladimir Putin. This means Trump has more meetings planned for the future with Vladimir Putin. Trump has also stated that there will be some land swapping between Ukraine and Russia. This is far from the first time he has used the phrase “land swapping.” Though it is unclear what Russia will cede to Ukraine, Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, has not laid a claim to any Russian territory. President Trump has also said that he will update European leaders if Putin were to promise a fair deal with Ukraine during the talks. He added that he will talk to the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy first out of respect. My opinion is that is unlikely but possible we could make a deal. POTUS has also said that he and Zelenskyy get along well, though Trump has also repeatedly blamed the Ukrainian president for the war. A war which has been going on since February 2022.
President Trump has plans for a meeting that includes both the Ukrainian president and the Russian president if the coming Putin talk goes well. This deal also has the interest of the European Union’s Vice President Kaja Kallas, who told American news networks that she wanted the talks to proceed traditionally. She has stressed that Europe has been clear that it will not accept a deal that Ukraine does not agree to. She also stated that if Ukraine is not a part of the deal nothing will be implemented and the war will go on.
The meeting between Trump and Putin has a lot at stake for Europe, as a ceasefire could potentially end all the fighting in Ukraine. Zelenskyy is expected to attend a different virtual meeting with Trump in order to try and make a ceasefire with Russia. It remains unclear whether Ukraine and its European allies will even agree to a deal. given that Zelenskyy and Putin are not on good terms. If Ukraine world agree to a deal with Russia, the United States, and Ukraine’s European allies, then the years-long war would be over, with land disputes being settled. Throughout the war-ridden land, changes get messy between Ukraine and Russia. The current holdings are As of today, controls the Ukrainian cities of Zaporizhia, Kherson, and Donetsk. Yet it is unclear if Russia will be willing to return the cities because of their early invasion of Ukraine in 2014, where the Russian army took Crimea, which they still control as of today. Discussing border changes will only start when a peace treaty or a valid ceasefire is agreed on by both Ukraine and Russia. Suppose Russia does not agree to a ceasefire. In that case, Trump has said that Russia will feel pain, which most likely means tariffs and even trade embargoes of Russian goods to America. If that’s not enough, well, according to Trump, the United States will send even more high-grade military equipment to Ukraine if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire. The Vice President of the EU said this meeting has a lot more implications for Europe. This is because Russia, is the largest European oil exporter. The current sanctions mean Europe is missing 70 percent of its oil supply so a peace deal could not only help Europe economy but Russia’s economy too. The stakes have never been higher for Russia and Ukraine. If the meeting tomorrow goes well, then peace might be an option; if not, then the war will continue with more lives lost, and more fighting.
